Hello ★
I'm Kim. I'm a Costa Rican-American director and screenwriter, born in the U.S to a Cuban-Costa Rican family and raised in Costa Rica. I studied Communication Sciences with an emphasis in Audiovisual Production at the University of Costa Rica. Later, I studied Screenwriting for Film and Television in the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica in Mexico City, where I was based for seven years, working on films and television shows for Netflix and other streaming platforms as a screenwriter.
My second short film as a director, Night Light (2022), became the first Costa Rican film to be nominated for a Palm d'Or in the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival. My shorts Suncatcher (2021) and The Moon Will Contain Us (2023) have been screened at esteemed venues, including NYFF, the Locarno Film Festival, Mar del Plata, and New Directors/New Films at MoMA and Lincoln Center. My debut feature film, If We Don’t Burn, How Do We Light Up The Night, now in post-production, participated in development programs such as La Fabrique Cinéma and Cinéma de Demain Focus Co Pro at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2022, I was a Guest Artist at CalArts University. In 2023, I joined the Berlinale Talents Program as a director and screenwriter and in 2024 I joined the Locarno Filmmakers Academy.
